I have been a fiber artist for more than 20 years, but have found my "artistic calling," experimenting with paint and paper. I am drawn to the saturated colors and layering that can be achieved using collage, oil and fluid acrylic paints. My current work involves experimentation with using collage and paint in combination. The use of collage with the paintings allows me to add an additional layer of texture and mystery to the pieces. Many of the images I paint are contemporary "characters" and landscapes that have been inspired by vintage children’s book illustrations, vintage photographs and ephemera. I am drawn to items which have a history, been handled by young and old alike and survived to be passed along or rediscovered. These images have a story just waiting to be told and my goal is to create pieces, which have a story – left up to the viewer to create. I recently retired from a career as a Registered Nurse and am a mother to 3 grown children. I am happily married to my true soul-mate, who supports me and grounds me when I need it.
I invite you to enjoy my blog and email me your comments, interests and inspirations. Blessings, Karen O'Brien
